Returning together

29 March, 2026

Dear KAUST community,

I hope you and your families enjoyed a restful Eid al-Fitr. As we come together again on campus, I am reaching out to reassure you that your well-being remains our foremost priority.

Our campus remains safe

Today, our campus returned to operating normally, our school welcomed students back to face-to-face classes, and our university has resumed its full rhythm of research and learning. Seeing our community return to campus, re-energized, is a reminder of what we are here to build together.

We are monitoring the region carefully

Like many of you, University leadership is following the regional situation closely. KAUST is aware of recent reports highlighting specific threats to American academic institutions in the Middle East. While there is no direct threat to our campus, we remain vigilant and proactive, ensuring our safety measures and emergency plans are continuously updated and ready. We do not want to minimize the anxiety that this ongoing situation may cause, particularly for those of you with family and friends elsewhere in the region.

Please be assured that our emergency management teams are in continuous contact with authorities and have robust plans in place for every aspect of campus life. We are preparing continuously and will not wait for circumstances to change before we act.

Business travel

Faculty and staff can submit a business case for attendance at conferences and events to their Dean or Vice President for review and approval. Please note that only travel to destinations outside of, and not transiting through, designated conflict zones will be considered.

Looking ahead

Our focus now is on ensuring you can pursue your work, studies, and lives here with confidence. We are investing in our readiness, strengthening our support systems, and preparing for a full and active semester ahead.

You will continue to receive frequent updates. If you have concerns about your safety, your travel, your studies, or anything else, please reach out.
